What you'll learn:

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to clean surfaces by producing a variable stream of water or cleaning agent. Pressure washing is used as a replacement for hand scrubbing in large areas or where surfaces are very soiled, including car parking areas, driveways, factory floors, external walls, fascias, stairwells and facades of buildings, as well as in industrial or mining sites. Some surfaces, such as cracked, painted or other sealed surfaces, may be sensitive to pressure washing.

You’ll learn how to:

Plan and prepare to clean using pressure washing:

  • Identify cleaning requirements, suitability for pressure washing, worksite access and security procedures and, if needed, clarify issues with supervisor, team member or client.
  • Select, check for fit and serviceability, and use personal protective equipment (PPE) according to WHS and job requirements.
  • Identify site hazards and risks, position safety signage and barriers, and cover and secure items requiring protection from pressure spray according to WHS and job requirements.
  • Check and document pre-existing damage to surfaces according to organisational requirements.
  • Determine appropriate cleaning procedures based on type and material composition of surfaces to be pressure washed and soil types.
  • Select the appropriate equipment and cleaning agents and confirm requirements for safe use according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Determine sequence of tasks for maximum hygiene and efficiency of cleaning.

Use pressure washing equipment and methods:

  • Pre-spray heavily soiled areas according to manufacturer specifications and organisational requirements.
  • Pressure wash using equipment and cleaning agents according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements.
  • Hand wash areas requiring additional treatment using suitable equipment and cleaning agents according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Rinse washed area using suitable equipment and allow to dry according to job and organisational requirements.

Complete work activities:

  • Tidy work area, remove safety signage and barriers and dispose of soil and waste in accordance with WHS and environmental requirements.
  • Safely clean and/or dispose of PPE as required by organisational standards.
  • Check cleaning equipment for faults, wear or damage and report in accordance with organisational requirements.
  • Record site cleaning and store cleaning equipment and materials in accordance with organisational requirements.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Our goal is to make assessing as easy an as fun as possible. You are required to provide evidence that you have completed the work. We use short answer questions, long answer questions, quizzes, photos and videos. Below are some activities that you will be required to do in order to complete this unit: 

Remove three of the following:

  • residue from industrial equipment used for food processing
  • graffiti from brick or concrete
  • grease and oil from concrete
  • pollution marks from a painted surface.

Candidates must clean each surface on at least two occasions.

 Our head trainer, Fiona Morris, has over 20 years experience in the cleaning industry. Not only has she established several successful cleaning businesses, she has trained many future cleaning business owners and upskilled many in the industry. 

She is a qualified trainer and assessor, holding a Cert IV TAE/ WHS and Cert III Cleaning Operations.
